The genre of the song we are using for our music video (KT Tunstall - Big Black Horse and The Cherry Tree) is acoustic rock. Therefore, we will be making an acoustic rock music video. Examples of other artists within this genre are:
Amy Macdonald - This Is The Life
The locations in this video are mainly location shots, which is quite typical of the genre as most acoustic rock videos are set outside or at least partly outside. In this video we see the artist walking down streets and wondering around a house. As none of these shots appear to be set in the studio, this defies the typical music video genre but fits with the acoustic rock conventions.
The main "Protagonist" in this video is the artist however there are other actors and extras present throughout the video, though this partly goes against the conventions for an acoustic rock music video, they play an important part in "photos" but not necessarily in the performance itself as they are simply led around the set.
The iconography present in the video clearly conform to the conventions of an acoustic rock video and a typical music video, for example, the artists clothing seems genuine and is not revealing or glamorous. The locations fit the idea that the artist is on a level with an audience, thus connecting more with the viewers.
Todorov's theory is not present in the narrative style however the theme on going throughout the video is that the artist is looking through photos. This goes hand in hand with the performance cuts of the video as we see the artist going to the places where the photos were taken. This video is mainly performance based as most acoustic rock videos are, other than the camera flashes and photos that feature throughout the video.
A lot of the conventions from the typical music videos are present in this video, such as the use of extreme close ups and close ups, to connect the audience to the artist, the editing pace fits the pace of the music or sound and the lyrics are related to the footage. However, no male gaze (Laura Mulvy) is present, thus conforming to the conventions of an acoustic rock video.
The music video doesn't contain any major ideologies such as 'good defeats evil' or 'love conquers all' but promotes the idea of friendship to the audience.
James Morrison - Please Don't Stop The Rain
All of this video, by James Morrison, is filmed on location. This is quite typical for the acoustic rock genre, as it doesn't focus on studio shots, as other genres such as hiphop would. The location also allows the audience to connect the lyrics to the visuals.
The main 'protagonist' of the video is the artist. There are no other people in the video which is typical of the genre. However, there is a dog present towards the end of the video.
The iconography of the video fits the artist: we see this through choice of costume - natural clothes but still quite stylised to differentiate him from the audience. The fact that the video takes place outside also fits the artists image and how he was discovered. The flecks of light falling from the sky not only tie in with the lyrics but also link to the fact that James Morrison's music is quite natural (like the location) but also a little extra something. This is typical of the genre.
The video doesn't have a typical narrative as it mainly focusses on the fact that the artist is walking through the rain. The video is performance based which is very typical of acoustic rock videos, therefore Todorov's theory is not present.
The media language conforms to the genre as it shows the artist in close ups to connect with the audience, has editing which matches the pace of the music and shows clearly how the lyrics connect to the visuals. It doesn't contain any male gaze (are there are no females) or the female gaze, it is purely about the music.
Because there is no real narrative in this video it does not have the opportunity to display any dominant or alternate ideologies.
